Marden Flag Competition is delighted to report that our first Stellar Sponsor of the Competition,

Jill and Steve Williams, Rose Villa Farm, have made a substantial and most generous donation and now head our list of sponsors.

Many thanks too to another Marden resident who has very kindly pledged Silver Sponsorship.

The current list of Sponsors is below. From their generosity the Competition is well on track, but of course, more sponsors are needed so we can reward all the category winners and runners up as well as the overall winner and then have the winning design made into a flag.

Meanwhile, the Brownies are busy putting finishing touches to their entries and Marden Primary Academy has held its own competition within the school. Hopefully, all the Brownies’ and students’ flag designs will be on display at the voting as well as the Academy’s winner and runners up. I have heard that the Guides are planning to enter the Competition ‘en masse’ and hope that this proves true! More entries are needed to ensure we have lots of great designs to choose from.

Grateful thanks to all our Sponsors:

Stellar: Jill and Steve Williams, Rose Villa Farm;

Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze: Neon Heating and Boiler Services Ltd;

Platinum and Bronze: Marden Chiropody;

Platinum: Berrington Water; John Ashcroft, Colin Bates, and Bill Wright;

Silver: Mrs Sue Chilcott and one other.

Please keep the entries coming and don’t worry if you can’t draw. If your dragon looks like a worm, just write ‘dragon’ on or by it. If you can’t get the colour just right, write down what the colour is that you want and show where on the design. All entries – write your name, age (that is Under 16, Under 60 or Over 60) and address on the back. For entrants who live outside Marden, give a justification for entry e.g. “Work for Neon Heating..”, “Grandad lives at xxx Walker’s Green” etc.

If you would like to be a sponsor or would like further details, call or text John Roberts on 07792 783 107 or by email to discuss the right level for you.

A reminder of what is happening: Closing date for entries is 24 May 2019; a Judges’ panel will be briefed and mentored by Philip Tibbetts, Communities Vexillologist from the Flag Institute. Leoni Linton, Director of Ignite CIC, the body running the Herefordshire County flag competition, will attend this meeting to see how things should be done. Judges will select a shortlist of finalists as well as selecting prize-winners in each category (under 16’s, 16 to 60 and Over 60s). The shortlisted designs will then be reproduced by the Flag Institute to a consistent and high standard of artwork for presentation for Public Voting to select the overall winner. Display of entries, Public Voting and announcement of the overall winner will take place at Marden’s Church and Community Fete on Sunday 23 June 2019.

We are on track to be the first Parish in Herefordshire to have an official flag to be flown freely by anyone!
